CAMDEN, NJ — Sitting in her room last Tuesday, Yolanda Deaver, 36, took a moment before pressing play on the George Floyd video. She had caught a short snippet earlier that morning but happened upon its entirety while scrolling through her phone. The 46-year-old Floyd, his neck held down by a Minneapolis police officer's knee, could be heard saying, “I can’t breathe” multiple times, as well as “Mama” and “Please” before dying on the curb as other officers looked on. “It made my heart sink,” Deaver told TAPinto Camden.

Police Officers Kneel, Join Marches in Cities Across the Country to Show Solidarity with Protesters

As protests demanding an end to police brutality and justice for George Floyd unfolded across the country over the weekend, social media was flooded with footage of police officers violently arresting demonstrators and firing rubber bullets and tear gas into crowds. Videos showing protesters, passersby and journalists being thrown to the ground by officers or bleeding after being struck by rubber bullets have only fueled further outrage.

Camden residents, elected officials march against police brutality

CAMDEN - Police officers who patrol this city followed a different path Saturday, joining residents in a march against racism. Elected officials and religious leaders also took part in the peaceful demonstration, which began as a grass-roots protest to the police-involved death of a Minneapolis man on Memorial Day. Meanwhile, more South Jersey law enforcement agencies released statements critical of the Minneapolis police action, which has sparked sometimes violent protests across the country.
